Women leadership in farmers' organizations

Organised by the European Commission, the European Development Days (EDD) brings the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences to inspire partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

For its twelfth edition on 5-6 June 2018 (Brussels), EDD aimed to bring together the European Union's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The event focused on the role of women and the need for their full and equal participation and leadership in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Under the main thread of ‘Women and Girls at the Forefront of Sustainable Development: protect, empower, invest’, the EDD 2018 agenda was framed by three major themes: 'Ensuring the physical and psychological integrity of Girls and Women', 'Promoting economic and social rights and empowerment of Girls and Women', 'Strengthening Girls’ and Women’s voice and participation’.

For its twelfth edition, EDD hosted speakers from across the world, representing different sectors and points of view on global development issues. This included Heads of State, Commissioners, high-level experts, grassroots activists and many more key players in women empowerment.

SFOAP partners were also there to discuss about women leadership in farmers' organizations (FOs) during a session organized by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). In fact, women empowerment and leadership development is one of the focus areas of Programme. The session showcased ways and venues for promoting women agendas into FOs and how institutions of smallholder farmers, like FOs, can be vehicles to respond to the needs of women in agriculture.

Speakers included Ms. Fatma Ben Rejeb CEO of the Panafrican Farmers Organisation (PAFO); Ms. Annick Sezibera, CEO of the Confédération des Associations des Producteurs Agricoles pour le Développement (CAPAD); Ms.Noumpoa Nakpergou, woman farmer representative of the Réseau des Organisations Paysannes et de Producteurs de l"Afrique de l'Ouest (ROPPA); Regis Meritan Head of Sector Agricultural Growth at the European Commission - DG for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO); and Roberto Longo, Senior technical Specialist at IFAD.
