SACAU: 2016 Young Farmers Forum in Swaziland

The Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU) held its 2016 Young Farmers (young agrientrepreneurs) Forum in Manzini Swaziland from 21st to 22nd May 2016.

The forum which preceded the SACAU Annual conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM), was opened by the Minister of Agriculture of the Kingdom of Swaziland and was attended by 81 participants from eleven countries.

It was held with support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), European Commission (EC), Swiss Development Agency (SDC) and French Development Agency (AFD) through the Support to Farmers’ Organization in Africa Program (SFOAP) and the German Technical Cooperation through AFC Consulting International.

This regional Forum was established in 2014 and brings together young female and male farmers from each of SACAU’s members, providing them with an opportunity to network and share knowledge and experiences in their agricultural enterprises. It has already facilitated business to business linkages. It is also in this space that these young farmers can really de ne the kind of agriculture they want to see – one that pays well.

The 2016 forum was aimed at consulting young farmers on the ideas to be utilised in the formulation of SACAU Regional Young Farmers’ Programme.

Young farmers shared their business experiences with each other and indicated the type and nature of interventions they would want to see for them to conduct their businesses sustainably particularly in terms of improving marketing, trade, standards and negotiations; and of enhancing skills, capacity, leadership, and professionalisation. The following were identified as the main pillars from which the “Young farmers Program” could be formulated: ICT in agriculture; transformation of farming into a career of first choice; and agri-entrepreneurship skills and capacity development.
