SACAU: Forthcoming Young Farmers' Forum in Swaziland, 21-22 May 2016

SACAU recognises that the success or future of African agriculture will hinge on how well technology and innovation will be deployed to solve pressing challenges facing the sector. The sector will require highly skilled (professional) producers to take full advantage of new technology and make the best decisions from available information. The entire sector will have to be transformed and the youth are in a better position to champion such transformation. SACAU intends to assist and guide them on this path through systematic mentorship and practical skills development programmes.

The SACAU Young Farmers’ Forum will be held from 21st to 22nd of May 2016 in Mbabane, Swaziland, with the support from SFOAP. It will precede the SACAU Annual Conference that will tale place in the same venue.

The regional young farmers’ forum is part of SACAU’s annual series that brings together practicing young farmers in southern Africa to share experiences and expose them to cutting age technologies and innovations in the sector. The 2016 forum will be a third in succession (see more on the 2015 edition here and visit SACAU youth webpage).

In particular, the forum aims:

  • To share with the young farmers SACAU’s vision of a farmer of the future and potential factors of success for future agriculture
  • To explore and expose young farmers to game changing technologies and innovations in the agriculture sector
  • To consult young farmers on some design elements of a proposed regional Young Farmers Program for their inputs
  • To provide an opportunity for young farmers to interact and exchange their experiences as farmers and with farmer leaders.

Expected Outputs include: (i) Clear understanding of the dynamics of future agriculture and the key attributes of farmers of the future; (ii) Increased awareness of technologies and innovations that make agriculture more attractive, lucrative and competitive; (iii) Buy in of young farmers to the proposed SACAU’s regional Young Farmers’ Program; (iv) Enhanced knowledge of what young farmers are doing in their respective countries.
