2016 SFOAP Steering Committee and Knowledge Management Event

On 10 February 2016, the SFOAP Steering Committee (SC) will be held in Rome back to back with the sixth edition of the Farmers' Forum. The SC will be followed by a Knowledge Management (KM) event (11 February).

Participants attending the meetings include representatives from the five regional Farmers Organizations (EAFF, PROPAC, ROPPA, SACAU and UMNAGRI) and their national member FOs, IFAD, the European Union (EU), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the French Development Agency (AFD) and AgriCord, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) as observers.

During the SC meeting, the 5 regional organizations will deliver presentations on their 2015 programme related achievements and on the main priorities for 2016. During the afternoon, thematic discussions will take place on SFOAP implementation on:

(i)   PAFO Strategic Plan;

(ii)   Women leadership in FOs and gender strategies and activities;

(iii)   Provision of economic services.

The KM event, is organised in two sessions. During the morning participants are going to discuss on how to promote knowledge management best practices amongst Farmers’ Organizations (FOs). During the afternoon the following our learning session will take place:

How to provide economic services by Farmers Organizations to their members: experiences and results by national FOs. Cases from West Africa will be analyzed and contributions from the other African regions will be also shared and discussed.

Governance within FOs: key issues and approaches for FOs accountability vis-à-vis their members. SACAU will present their approach, strategy and actions for ensuring good governance practices among their members and the results achieved so far. Other FOs will share their contributions on promoting good governance at the regional and national levels.

Monitoring and Evaluation: institutional M&E systems and linkages with donors supported projects (including SFOAP). PROPAC will present findings and challenges in terms of M&E. Other FOs will also contribute to the discussion based on their experience.

The experience of the EAC Cooperative Societies Bill in Eastern Africa. EAFF will present the process led by the organization and their members bringing to the voting of the East African Community Co-operative Societies Bill by the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), and challenges ahead for its full implementation.
